Dr. AUDREY FRESHMAN, Ph.D, LCSW, CASAC
is a licensed clinical therapist located on Long Island in Rockville Centre, New York specializing in trauma, substance abuse, and family relations. She is trained in interventions and can assist families to get help for a loved one suffering from a problem with substance abuse. She is familiar with referral sources, local and national rehabilitation centers.
Since 1985, she has helped guide parents, families, couples, and adolescents towards recovery and its aftermath. She has presented at community workshops, schools, professional organizations and published extensively on adolescent substance abuse; trauma; PTSD; and chemical dependency in the Jewish community. She works extensively with families of high school and college-aged teens who are concerned about emerging problems with alcohol, drugs, anxiety, depression and ADHD.
Dr. Freshman has a private office located in Rockville Centre, New York. She counsels individuals, families, couples and parent-child relationships.

Dr. Freshman completed her Doctorate in Social Work from New York University in 2009. She received her Masters in Social Work from Columbia University in 1979 and her B.A. cum laude in psychology from New York University in 1975. She has been a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor since 1985.
Dr. Freshman developed the family-based model of treatment of chemical dependency at Tempo Group, Inc. a NYS OASAS agency located on Long Island, New York. As Associate Director she continues to bring contemporary thinking to the organization to enhance programming and treatment for clients and their families suffering from substance abuse disorder. She works with families of young and older adolescents, college students and young adults who are seeking strategies for coping with emerging problems of alcohol and drug abuse in their significant others. She also counsels aduts with chemical dependency and supervises staff on women's issues and addiction.
Dr. Freshman is currently an Adjunct Professor and lectures on adolescence and substance abuse at NYU Silver School of Social Work Post Masters Certificate Program in the Addictions. She developed the curriculum for training in chemical dependency for Hofstra University where she was an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Department of Marital/Family counseling.
Since its inception in 1999, Dr. Freshman has been the Assistant Editor of the Journal of Practice of Social Work in the Addictions. She has published extensively on the subjects of adolescence, trauma and addiction. She has made numerous workshop presentations on these topics and is well-versed in addressing the risk factors and treatment of addiction.
In 2003, Dr. Freshman appeared on The John Walsh Show as an "Guest Expert" to discuss methamphetamine addiction in women.
Dr. Freshman is attuned to the issues of trauma and addiction within the Jewish community. She completed her doctoral dissertation at New York University on the Intergenerational Transmission of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and its relation to substance abuse amongst adult children of Holocaust survivors. Her research confirmed that children that were raised by parents who themselves have experience trauma and PTSD are vulnerable to feeling increased levels of anxiety and depression. They might be more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with stress.
Recently, Dr. Freshman has extended her research to the victims of the Madoff Ponzi scheme. She recently completed a research survey of PTSD in victims that was reported in NEWSDAY, NEW YORK magazine and she was interviewed internationally by several media groups as far off as Holland and Croatia. She coordinates an online emotional support group that can be reached a http://groups.google.com/group/madoffsupportgroup. She has offered Long Island Support Groups for Madoff Victims and was featured in a July 2009 article appearing in The Jewish Week.
